Martine Cools

Martine Cools is Full Professor, head of the Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology Unit of her institution and Senior Clinical Investigator, supported by the Flanders Research Foundation. She coordinates the clinical and research activities of the DSD reference centre Ghent since 2007. This centre is dedicated to the multidisciplinary care and research in the field of variant sex development. She is also a member of the Ghent multidisciplinary child transgender and Turner clinics. Her main research focuses on gonadal development, clinical management and cancer risk in DSD. She has been actively involved in several collaborative European research projects (FP7, Sober, COST, EuRRECa), and coordinated the writing of two consensus documents on the management of DSD. She supervised 9 PhD students and (co-)authored more than 100 original papers, invited reviews and book chapters, mainly in the field of DSD and gender variant youth. Martine Cools received the ESPE young investigator award in 2010 and the Price Luc Broeckaert for medical scientific research in 2020. Martine Cools is chair of the ESPE Science Committee and member of ESPE Council since 2021. She has acted as a counsellor for the Belgian and Flemish government in matters related to DSD and transgender care. She has optimal contacts with several patient organisations, such as RadiOrg, dsdNederland, adrenalnet.nl and dsdfamilies.
