Chris J Pemberton

Dr Pemberton is Research Professor in the Department of Medicine and a senior leader of the Christchurch Heart Institute (CHI). He is also Chief Scientific Officer of Upstream Medical Technologies, a biomarker company based on CHI research. Research interests focus mainly on links between the heart and other organs and how the discovery and development of new in vitro assays can translate into potential research and clinical tests that improve clinical outcomes, including how heart markers relate to serology and outcomes post-COVID infection. He also leads a team of research fellows and students that carry out studies on novel biological effects of peptides using ex vivo and in vivo models of ischemia and cardiac dysfunction. He is former Associate Editor of the journals Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine – Heart Failure and Clinical Science; is a member of the Steering Committee of the International Society of Bioactive Peptides; is a Professional Member of the European Society of Cardiology and an elected Member of their Working Group on Cellular Biology of the Heart; is current co-chair of the Health Research Council of New Zealand First research Grant assessing Committee and previous Chair of the HRC International Relationship Fund Committee. In 2011 he received the Liley Medal from the Health Council of New Zealand.
