Daryl DOS Schwenke
Assoc. Prof Daryl Schwenke is a cardiovascular physiologist with a particular interest in neuroendocrine control of the heart in health and disease. Having graduated from the University of Otago in 2002, Daryl subsequently pursued a post-doctoral fellowship in Japan under the leadership of Professor Kenji Kangawa, who is credited with the discovery of the hormone Ghrelin. Daryl developed a keen interest in the cardiovascular effects of Ghrelin and, since returning to Otago in 2009 in the department of Physiology, Daryl's research has uncovered the mechanistic and therapeutic potential of Ghrelin in treating cardiac and vascular pathologies, as well as the neural control of the cardiovascular system.
