Carmel Smart
Dr Carmel Smart has worked as a Specialist Diabetes Dietician at the John Hunter Children’s Hospital, Newcastle, NSW, Australia for over 25 years. She holds appointments at the University of Newcastle and Hunter Medical Research Institute where she has grown a team of clinician researchers. Dr Smart has led national and international clinical practice guidelines in the dietary management of diabetes and is a co-author of the ADA Medical Nutrition Therapy Handbook. She is a past Council member of the International Society of Paediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) and convenor of the ISPAD Science School for Health Professionals. Dr Smart is an invited member of an international collaboration (PEAK) charged with translating evidence on exercise and diabetes into educational resources for people living with diabetes and health care professionals.
Dr Smarts primary research interests are in the impact of varying macronutrients on postprandial glycaemia and developing an effective dosing strategy for fat, protein and carbohydrate. Her commitment to the translation of research into clinical practice has seen her regularly an invited plenary speaker across Australia and internationally to front-line clinicians and families.
